Is there a way to set XP Pro up so I can run scheduled
processes, such as AVG Antivirus update and system scan,
when there is no one logged onto the computer?

You can use accessories \system tool\Scheduled Tasks but
you'll need a password that matches a password in your
user account, in other words each time you log in you
would have to give that same password.

Better way is in :
Documents and Settings\Your account\Start Menu\startup

and place the programs there.
