Hello,

Can anyone tell me of a program that can load a program into the RAM and
run it from there? I stumbled across a shareware tool, although I cannot
remember the name (was some time ago).

Uhhh...Windows? Or Linux if you prefer a different flavor.

The program I saw before claimed to load the application into the RAM
and run it from there, as opposed to loading only certain bits into the
RAM and accessing the rest from the HD as required.

No, it gets cleared everytime you turn off. I find it can speed up an
install quite a lot :)

All it does is load the application into the RAM, so whenever it needs
to read from the exe it can do it with memory speeds as opposed to hard
drive speeds, which is so very very much quicker.

So i have a ram drive, 16 Mo, from Cenatek...but it does not load
applications into ram, -it allows you to do it. It's pretty nice, i
should
have bought more memory <sigh !> for my laptop. Once the application
is into memory, you have to tell windows it's there. But for any no
install it's great. imho

I've dedicated 256MB to it. Just copy an exe, document, any file to it
and it gets loaded into the RAM. Then just double click the icon as you
would on any other file. It handles exactly the same as a hard drive,
except it read/writes to the ram.

"Ram Disks are exactly as the name suggests. Using Ram Disk software you
are able to assign part of your physical memory to act as a drive on
your computer. You can then use this drive as any other drive on your
system but the difference is the data is cleared no matter what upon a
reboot (since all data on the RAM chip is lost). So you can see that the
best things to store on a Ram Disk are your Temporary Internet files and
Cookies. Every bit of persistent data will 'vanish' without a trace when
you want it to. There is also the added bonus of reduced disk activity
and possibly enhanced performance."

The original basis of this post - program to install a program to ram is
still great interest to me - however it seem to have fallen back to ramdisks
- use one all the time as my temp folder - and is useful for running
'no-install' type apps.
Nevermind, found it myself. For anyone interested:
http://lists.gpick.com/pages/RAM_Disks.htm

The link to ARDisk shows that this useful app is now defunct - great shame.
The others apart from the M$ driver are mostly shareware so I have upped to
alt.binaries.freeware ARDisk
and Qdisk (later based on the microsoft driver) for anyone interested.
The ARDisk is definitely the easiest to use as it installs as an applet in
control panel, however last time I tried to install to XP there was some
problem and I had to resort to Qdisk (configure this in device manager)
Look at the included pdf's of their site pages for some info

It would seem the header was misleading.

Thanks for that info - I'll revise the ACF program info page

which lists these three RAM Disk apps

revised info:

I'm a little confused by this discussion.

The support for and development of AR RAM Disk are discontinued.
But the program itself can still be downloaded from the website,
through their Downloads page.

The ACF Program Description

http://www.pricelesswarehome.org/acf/programs/0021.php

lists a download link of
download page v 1.20 (2003-07-01) (ramdisk.zip) (93 KB)
http://www.arsoft-online.de/products/download.php?id=1
(desc. rev.: 2004-09-18)

That link does not work anymore.

The description page appears to be

http://www.arsoft-online.de/index.p...&catid=14&order=dmdate_published&ascdesc=DESC

The new download link appears to be

http://www.arsoft-online.de/index.p...d=30&task=docclick&bid=1&limitstart=0&limit=8

(I say "appears to be" due to the long URLs and the possibility of
error in copying, line wrapping, etc.)

Ben

Yup. I noted that was *revised* info, showed the last freeware version info and a link to the site
where it can be downloaded. Are you suggesting I also should have noted that arsoft-online.de is the
author's site?

No, I thought you were saying that it was no longer available for
download (discontinued).

The most recent info I have is shown on the ACF program info pages. The app's description page (link
shown as "desc." on the ACF page) may be outdated.

Those pages are (primarily) related to the Pricelessware List. This app was nominated for PL2005.
Its description dates from that time (desc. rev.: 2004-09-18) The description pages were created or
updated when the PL selection process was complete and likely will remain unchanged till the PL2006
selection process is complete. (The PL2005 nominations page links to those descriptions.)

I think a note that an app's description page may be outdated would be helpful. Adding that to the
todo list. . .

another failure to communicate. . . ;) I meant development has been discontinued (vs. an app that
has become shareware etc. etc.).

FWIW - I *remove* author's links when the app is no longer available on the author's site and show a
new link if one is available. In *theory* all the links that are shown on the ACF pages should take
you to a site where the app can be downloaded. ditto when I'm posting the info. . .
