Run an excel macro without tying up excel?

I would ideally like to run a macro (a continuously updating timer or
something) in the corner of excel while still being able to use excel? Is
this possible just using the vbs embedded in excel or do I need a separate
copy of VisualBasic?

I doubt you will find much more than what is shown at Chip Pearson's site if
this is based on using Ontime
