rules and the new mail indicator

Mark J. McGinty

There is a certain type of email I receive periodically, that I never read.
(Specifically, I co-admin a mail list, and whenever some idiot spammer tries
to post spam to the list, I get a notification.)

What I would like is for receipt of these notices to be invisible, I don't
want to see them in my inbox and I don't want the little envelope in the
tray to show up, so I created a rule, and set it to:

clear the Message Flag
and delete it
and mark it as read

They do get deleted, but annoyingly, the envelope in the tray is shown. I
added "mark it as read" hoping that would make it happen (when the other two
actions failed to do so.) This happens even if the unwanted messages are
the only items received by a given retrieve session with my POP3 provider.

The envelope in the tray is cleared when I either empty deleted items, or do
anything that opens any message, read or not. (In other words, it functions
as it always does.)

I cannot filter these items at the server, because I can't merely block the
sender (I get other notices that I do need to read) and my provider does not
allow any explicit filters other than sender or sending domain. Allowing it
to create implicit filters by "marking as spam" is too coarse, it blocks all
notices.

So the question, is there any way to create a rule that will clear that
envelope it the tray thing? I understand it may be possible for that tray
thing to get cleared incidentally if wanted email is received during the
same retrieve session, and I am prepared to live with that if necessary.

TIA,
Mark

Change the order of the rule to Mark as read, Clear the flag, Delete it and
stop processing more rules. See if that works.
