rtsp protocol in internet explorer

Why is it not possible to click a link that says:
rtsp://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/streamingfile.3gp
IE says: page cannot be displayed.
Why doesn't IE start the "quick time" or "real audio"
plugin and let them take care of the rtsp protocol ???
