RSS issues in Outlook 2007

Jordan Mills

I have a bunch of feeds that I want to work. They work fine when I first
import them, but they soon die, giving two errors for each feed. I've
already tried removing the feeds (which is a pain in the hindquarters for
100 feeds), closing outlook, verifying the process not running, deleting the
..obi files, starting outlook, and importing the opml file again. It works
fine for a while, then soon dies. Oddly, it seems that the same feeds later
die. These are the errors I get (for each URL in my feed list that
experiences the proble):

Task 'RSS Feeds' reported error (0x9AC40155) : 'Outlook cannot download the
RSS content from <URL> because of a problem connecting to the server. An OLE
registration error occurred. The program is not correctly installed. Run
Setup again for the program.'
Task 'RSS Feeds' reported error (0x9AC40155) : 'Synchronization to RSS
Feed:"<URL>" has failed. Outlook cannot download the RSS content from <URL>
because of a problem connecting to the server.'

Any ideas?

RTM I believe. it's not tagged beta. And you're right about the
head-scratching.

LOL on the head scratching... are the feeds that fail from the same server or source? If yes, do you get other feeds from that same source without the failure messages?

I believe so. It seems to consistently keep reading the same feeds, and
consistently begin to fail on the same ones.

I believe I completely misunderstood your question on first reading.
Actually yes, there are some feeds from a given server that work, and some
that don't. I can't find any pattern right now. For example, NPR food at
http://www.npr.org/rss/rss.php?id=1053 works fine, NPR Health and science at
http://www.npr.org/rss/rss.php?id=1007 consistently fails. Chron news at
http://www.chron.com/rss/chronicle/index.rss works, chron news bizarre at
http://www.chron.com/rss/bizarre/index.rss consistently fails.

I just realized that both of the failures are the second subscription to
that server in the list. I tried removing npr health and science to see if
it was related to that, but it still failed (I have plenty of failures that
are the only sub of that server).

When I was hitting send/receive, a couple of the formerly broken feeds
worked. Once. Now they fail again, with the same pattern.

Nope. Everything else is otherwise the same. I can view all the feeds in
IE, there's no difference in them having HTML content or not, it doesn't do
it if they have a .rss attachment or not. I guess I could look at the MIME
type, but it should be consistent across servers...

....

Well now that's interesting. So I checked the MIME types displayed by IE,
and the two I listed that worked are returned as "XML Document", the two
that don't are some pictureit document, and "file".

So much for that. Other failures are
http://www.fatwallet.com/rssfeed.php?c=18&deals=50 ("XML document"),
http://slashdot.org/index.rss ("XML document"), etc. Do you know of an easy
tool to find out HTTP headers, like the MS equivalent of wget? I can't find
mine.

Never mind the MIME types, testing with a win32 version of wget shows
they're all returned as text/xml.

okay, so I just installed IE 7, and it worked briefly. Now the error is
different:

Task 'RSS Feeds' reported error (0x8004010F) : 'The operation failed. An

I only get that, once for each failed feed.
