RRAS ADSL Internet Connection.

I am running a copy of W2K server on which I need to
create a shared internet connection via an ADSL modem. I
have setup the demand dial interface in RRAS, NAT has been
added as a protocol and the interface added to that
protocol. The TCP/IP settings for the interface are to
automatically obtain the IP and DNS servers (which it
does). The connection is established ok, but no internet
connection is available for IE. When you ipconfig it,
there is no default gateway for the connection.

I have set up a separate DUN to test the ADSL connection
that connects OK and obtains the default gateway
automatically. IE can detect the connection and all is
sweet. BUT - I cant use ICS on the DUN as it doesnt work
whilst DHCP and DDNS are running (grrrr - known problem).

The difference between the two connections appears to be
an option that is greyed out on the RRAS interface but not
on the DUN. It's in the advanced options of the TCP/IP
config - "This checkbox applies only when you are
connected to a local network and a dial-up network
simultaneously. When checked, data that cannot be sent on
the local network is forwarded to the dial up network."
Then there is a tick box for the "use default gateway on
remote network".

When I untick this box on the DUN it reacts the same way
as the RRAS interface - no gateway - no internet
connection.

I assume that there is some additional config required to
achieve the same thing that the option allows you to do
automatically. I attempted to add a static route on the
demand dial interface to specify the default gateway, but
the default gateway greys out when you select it?

I don't know where to go next. Could somebody point me in
the right direction?

Gavin,

What is the route that is being used to dial the connection? Since this
route is initiating the connection, I would assume this route suffices all
internet traffic. I don't think this has anything to do with the default
gateway. Were you able to get the Internet access working with the default
gateway? If so, it is probable that the route used to dial the connection is
not sufficient and more static routes need to be added. Check to see if you
have configured the private and public interfaces correctly for NAT. Also,
have you explored using AutoDial for this purpose?

Kadir,

I think I may have found the solution under knowledge base
article Q254762. You are right that I need to add a static
route, but with the destination 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0
leaving the gateway greyed out.

This should provide a route to the ISP services.

I hope this resolves the issue, I will find time to test
this afternoon. I have only set up a private to public
interface, so may continue to post if I have any further
issues.

Thanks for your help.
