RPC unexpected termination

Brian

Hi, I just had my computer installed with XP Pro.
However, it keeps returning a message saying "Windows
must restart b/c the RPC (Remote Procedural Call) service
terminated unexpectedly" about every five minutes and
automatically shuts down after about a minute. Any ideas
on how to fix it? Cheers, much appreciated.

Apparently, your computer has an unwelcome visitor (VIRUS) known
as the WM32 Blaster/Lovsan WORM. It only takes a split second for
this WORM to infect your computer if a firewall is not enabled and you
have an active internet connection.

It entered the computer through the internet connection because the "firewall"
was not properly enabled and essential critical updates were not installed from
the Windows Update website. For instructions on fixing the problem, visit:

If your computer is constantly attempting to shutdown
or reboot, quickly go to:

Start > Run and type: CMD , and hit enter.
This opens the Command Prompt window.

Then type: shutdown -a , and hit enter.

This should halt the rebooting problem.

Then immediately turn-on Windows XP's built-in Firewall:

Sounds like the problem I had when going on line first
time with my home version of XP..I was hit with
the 'welchia' virus which just terminates your connection
and shuts down windows. I used my older computer with
windows 98 to download repair tool and transfer it via
floppy disc to new PC and execute the repair tool on my
new PC. Make sure you have the XP built in firewall
activated too. Symantec web site will give you further
details.

To stop the reboots: Go to Start/Run and type in: services.msc. Scroll down
to Remote Procedure Call (RPC)/Recovery/First Failure/Restart the Service.

Close Windows Explorer, run the edit on line 257 which includes the prompt
for the patch once your system has been cleaned.

This script removes all variants of the W32.Blaster.Worm (original, B, C, D,
E and F) and will inform you whether or not the patch is already installed.
