rpc is terminating, system halts

after a fresh install of windows xp sp2 and setting up my
pc i thought it would be a good idea to install the anti-
spyware program. It ran a scan and found about 3 minior
items. On reboot there is some process running that slows
it down to a crawl. after 30 seconds or so there is a
warning that pops up that the system is shutting down
because rpc was terminated. I tried all the steps in
every tech advisory i could get my hands on, but the
system never displays a task bar before it shuts down,
going into services.msc has no effect when you select
properties on rpc it will not respond. I ran all types of
worm scans to see if something snuck in but they all came
back negative. What ever this problem is I dont think it
is caused by a virus, I believe the anti-spyware may have
deleted or corrupted some files. I also tried to
reinstall xp using the repair method with no
success...anybody got any ideas? I guess I could reformat
and install windows again but I hate to be beat by a
computer!

The beta killed the firewall, and you have the Blaster virus, which you can fix several ways. Easiest is to go to the Update site,
and download the "Malware' update.

go to start/run, type: SHUTDOWN -A to stop the restarting.

You've got a virus, as Mark mentions. You can read up on Blaster and fight
it, or you can call, in the US or Canada, 1-866-pcsafety and get free help
from Microsoft PSS to do it right. Elsewhere check Microsoft's web site for
a local support number, and call--this free support should be available
everywhere, although the telephone call may not be free.

I have the same problem. Running xp sp2 and downloaded
Microsoft Anti-Spyware. The spyware detected newdot
spyware and removed it. I setup the Anti-spyware to run
it's update at 2AM. The following day it stopped
connecting to the internet. I started to experience
bootup delays. I noticed 5 or 6 rpc services running and
slowing down the PC. I killed on instance and I got the
RPC error giving me 1 minute before automatic shutdown.
Have you found a solution?
