Roxio/Sonic conflicts with XP SP2

Roxio and Sonic have been giving my system fits for over two years now. The
main problem is in shutdown. One or another program will hang, either not
even telling me it's stuck in some loop, or forcing me to click End Now,
twice, to end it. RecordNow is the main culprit. But though I thought
DirectDBNotify (whatever whatever) was finally gotten rid of, it just visited
again last night, forcing me to bang on End Now twice.

This is not the end of the world. But it is a constant irritation.

Do you have any idea where I should go for a solution other than the
complete reinstall of XP that Dell suggests?

Why not just uninstall all the Roxio programs and use something else?
Here's a free CD/DVD burner:

That is very tempting. But Dell technicians keep telling me I should use the
original (XP) Roxio programs. When I have unisntalled them, and used
something else, I never got both the CD and the DVD to function right. But a
free burner? How can I pass that up?
Thanks so much.

You might want to consider removing "Drag To Disk" module from Roxio.
This module lets you create a "huge" floppy drive with most RW medias.
