Router setup problems causing browser operability woe

I just set up my first home wireless network yesterday, and I am seeing
bizarre behavior in firefox & ie7. Secure web pages in particular seem to be
failing to authenticate/function (tho not all secure sites are affected) even
windows live mail throws up warnings that certificate is not authenticated.
I'm putting the cause of this down to an incorrect router setup, as the
switch to broadband is the only change I have made to my home setup. Do I
need to open ports etc, to allow secure pages to function properly thru the
router?

Further to my browsing troubles I have told that UDP protocols don't
function properly through a router without further setup, how do I do this?

Most grateful for any advice. Thanks.
