How many devices can a router handle

I've been told one router can handle 254 machines

Did you read the manual at the link you provided? The number of connections
depends on your configuration. For exampole if you are using the router as
a dhcp server the maximum number of leases can be 253. If you are assigning
static addresses the manual says unlimited connections (but practically
unlimited will not work).
