router keeps crapping out

Hello, I am in need of some input reguarding my Linksys wrt54g
wireless router. It seems for no reason the router keeps dropping my
internet connection. I get not internet connection on the pc that is
hardwired to port 1, and my pc with a wireless pci card says "network
connected signal strength excellent", yet it won"t connect to the net.
I have to reset the router to default settings, unplug it and re-run
the set-up and configuration software. Why? Could the router be on its
way out? It is downstairs in my crawlspace where it has been for the
last 3yrs. it is dry and cool there, the router is not warm to the
touch. It is also plugged into a surge protector. This has happened 3
times in the last week. Anyone with some input on this matter would be
a great help.
Thanks in advance for your time and effort.

Maybe it's your ASDL/cable modem or your ISP's problem?

Or, it could be that the electric company is performing work in the area and
the electric supply is provided with a fresh supply of spikes and other
noise.

Our transformers (wall warts) begin to get flakey and will work
intermittently. Switching to another power supply for the Linksys router
might be an answer too.

It sounds more like your isp or a line problem rather than a router issue. I
would give them a call and see if they have been doing any maintenance over
the past week. As far as the wireless pc reading "excellent", that only
means that the router signal (carrier) is strong and has nothing to do with
whether or not there is data flowing.

I had the same issue, the router seem to crap out and I would have to
restart it.

After about a year, I was doing some other work and the cable guy told me
the ends of the cable were black. The reason they were black is I had a
lightning strike in the street about a year or so before. They replaced the
cables and it all seems to work ok now.

What cables did they replace? The router to modem cable? or the actual
coax.

The lightning stroke was in the street, so, he checked the box at the
street, then the cable to the house, which was replaced.

The cables inside the house seemed fine.

Cable modem and/or router could have absorbed a bunch of energy, making them
flaky. Have them replace the cable modem, since that comes first.

Not only flakey, they did crap out but the new router would lose the
connection about twice every month and I had to reboot it. The cable modem,
which was replaced, appeared to work fine. The cable TV had a lot of
pixilating.

After the cable from the street to the house was replaced, it worked
normally.
