I am trying to find out if I can change the slide itself to a portrait format
(like for a printer) The slides are all longer horizontally, but I would like
one to be longer vertically. I am using Office 2003.

File | Page Setup | select Portrait

I am only trying to lenghten one slide vertically, not the entire presentation.

You can't mix portrait and landscape slides in a single presentation; and in
fact, all slides in a presentation must be the same page size.

Depending on your situation, one of the suggestions here may help, though:
Mix Portrait and Landscape slides in a presentation
