RootDNSServers container is missing!

Hello,

I followed the MS article on replacing the cache.dns file, then
deleting the RootDNSServers container etc. When you restart DNS it is
supposed to recreate the RootDNSServers container, but it did not.
Everything i have done has not put the RootDNSServers container back.

How can I get that container back?

Thanks in advance

What was the original issue that caused you to do this?

The Root servers were missing in DNS and I found the article on
replacing the root servers w/ the cache.dns. I have the root servers
back in DNS but the container is still MIA.

Thanks

You mean when you go into DNS properties, Root Hints tab, it is empty or
grayed out?

If it's grayed out, it means a Root zone exists, which looks like a period:
("."). When a root zone exists, possibly due to when dcpromo was ran on a
2000 machine, the server wasn't connected to the internet, therefore dcpromo
assumed when it configured DNS that the system was not meant to have
internet connectivity. So dcpromo creates the root zone. If it exists,
delete it, refresh the console, or close it and open it again, and check the
Root Hints tab.

If this is not the case, please elaborate, and explain what container you
are speaking of (one of the partitions in AD that you are viewing using ADSI
Edit?).

On some installation on SBS2003 (DELL) the rootserver is missing, but i only
import it from the ISPs DNS.

I am having exactly the same problem the MS article is 249868.
Please read that and you understand what we are looking for.

In DNS manager Root Servers are there but in Active Directory Users and Computers MMC ... (Advanced Features) System\MicrosoftDNS the entry RootDNSServers was not restored.

How can I get that container back??

(In another installation with SBS, I used the same and I had correctly back thge container with its objecs!).

Solved!

Repeat the instructions of MS 249868 article BUT DO NOT USE Notepad to edit the CACHE.DNS file to match the new file (named.root) from FTP.INTERNIC.NET.

The trick is to use the old file in %systemroot%\system32\dns\samples\cache.dns and modify it with the old EDIT command in a cmd window (I saw there are 2 rootserver IP changed).

This was because the file format for CACHE.DNS will be corrupted by Notepad or similar (I suppose it is in Unix txt format).

bye to all
