When can we expect MS to release a rollup pack with all 10,000 patches
released since SP2? i'm not talking about service pack 3. i'm talking
about a security rollup. isn't it about time?

the rollup you reference is dated October 14, 2003 and is for Windows XP
SP1. one clue is that a post-SP2 rollup would need to be about 70 MB in
size by this point.

I believe you have located the Update Rollup between SP1 and SP2!
To my knowledge - there is no Pre-SP3/Post-SP2 "Update Rollup".
I also have not heard of any talk for it.

Personally - I just integrate all my installation media with all the updates
and also have a script that installs all of them for me for machines that
show up on my doorstep that do not need to be installed from scratch. That
way - I don't often notice there is SP2 and 83+ things to install.

can you refer me to an internet source on how to do this? do you use
something like nlite? i've tinkered with such programs before and i don't
like them much. i already know how to slipstream service packs. i prefer
more of a hands-on approach, even if it's labor intensive. :)

Most updates after SP2 can be integrated using the /integrate switch.

You can download each update manually - based off the KB Article number,
etc. That way you can back it up/burn a CD of them in case you need them or
use them to keep a slipstream/integrated (updated) Windows XP CD.

You can see the critical (security and other) patches released for a given
month using the following:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms##-***.mspx

At the end of this line you see "ms##-***.mspx" .. If you simply replace ##
with the two-digit year and the *** with the three character month
abbreviation, you will see the list of "critical" and "important" patches
for that month (since it only happens once a month usually, if you check by
the second Tuesday (wait until afternoon) of each month - you should be
fine) - note that future months will not work.

As an example...

December 2004's patches..

March 2005's patches..
None released.. so that one will fail...

May 2005's patches..

Thanks for all the information. I decided to use the batch file approach
and I'm pleased with the outcome. Never toyed with batch files before.

well, i haven't been holding my breath because it's my opinion that a rollup
should have been released long ago. i was just hoping somebody at MS came
to their senses and was working on it. :)
 
IMO, SP3 should've been released long ago, too.
