Rolling Back Downloaded Updates

Hi .Can anyone tell me if it is possible to Rollback (undo) the Downloaded
Automatic Updates that have been installed on my computer.
I would like to find the offending download from Microsoft that I am now
totally convinced has put my operating System out of wack.
I would like to be able to go from the most recent download and remove them
one at a time until I find the offender.
I have found that my System Restore no longer works properly , ie most of
the old Restore Points no longer exist and when I do find a valid point I get
a message saying like "Failed to Restore".
I also get Internet Explorer Script Errors in most programs EVEN WHEN I'M
NOT ON THE INTERNET.
And yes I have tried some of the other remedies proposed to others with the
same problems in the Knowledge Browser strings.
And yes I have had my system thoroughly scanned for Viruses etc with my own
installed software and Online scans by others and found to be clean.
Failing a successfull remedy by this forum I may be forced to Re-format my
HD and re-instal the software and then block all Automatic Updates from
Microsoft.
System Details are:- Windows OS XP Professional with all the latest Updates
& Patches.
Internet Explorer:-Version 7.0.5730.11
Also have the Windows Security Centre with latest updates.

Control Panel --> Add or Remove Programs --> make sure the 'Show Updates'
checkbox is checked and scroll down to find the latest updates installed.
Remove the offending ones.

You can, of course, try the suggestions Shenan provided you with info on how
to remove from your system one or more Windows updates that you think might
have caused your problem. But I really wonder - based on all the info you
provided in your query - as to whether that's the root cause of the problems
you're experiencing.

It seems to me that a Repair install of the OS might be called for at this
point. Have you considered that approach and are you familiar with that
technique?

Hi Anna
No I am not familiar with the technique of Repair install of the OS.
A few tips would be handy.

Just a few additional thoughts re the Repair installation process...

The process is relatively straightforward. It would be roughly akin to
making a fresh install of the OS, but in nearly every case your existing
programs &
user-created data would be retained. Notice I said "nearly". While it would
be a rather rare situation where data would be lost or corrupted as a result
of the Repair install, and as unlikely as it may be, it *could* happen.

So if there are any programs and/or other data on your present drive that
are absolutely crucial to you and you could not tolerate its loss, then I
would strongly suggest that before undertaking the Repair install you first
either make a clone of your existing HDD (using a disk imaging program) or
use some other means to copy whatever data you want to some other media.

I really don't want to overemphasize the possible negatives in this
situation because in the overwhelming amount of cases where a Repair install
is undertaken there's no problem with loss or corruption of data occurring.

There are a number of websites that contain step-by-step instructions for
undertaking a Repair install. Let me assure you that it's not a difficult
process and not terribly time-consuming. If you do a Google search on "XP
repair install", you'll be pointed to many of these sites. In addition to
the sites Shenan referred you to here are a couple more...

http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=138

Assuming the Repair install is successful, you should use your A-V program
to immediately check out your PC for any virus infestation. Also, you will
need to download/install *all* the MS critical updates since SP2. (I'm
assuming that if the Repair install is necessary, you will be undertaking it
with a XP CD that contains SP2). That, of course, is one of the downsides re
undertaking a Repair install. It's usually an onerous task to download all
the Critical Updates from MS especially if you have a dialup phone
connection rather than broadband.
