Role Based Securityon ASP.NET

Confused !

I know this is not the ASP.NET newsgroup but there is not much going on
there today so I thought I would ask some of you guys.

When using Windows Integrated Security, you can implement roles. Where are
these groups are they local groups on the server or are they domain groups
or universal groups. I cant seem to get it to work with any.
