RMA a 9800 Pro without fan?

Unbelievably I can't find my original fan, I had replaced it with an Artic
Cooler. Can I assume ATI would not accept a return on a unit with a fan?

I see a fan for sale on ebay, perhaps that's the route I should go. Upon
startup one morning my 9800 was totally dead. One long beep and 2 short,
which means video problem. Hmmm......the X800 pro is looking good. But I
would still have to try and RMA the 9800 and put it in my son's computer.
Not to mention trying to find one here in Canada.

I think it is safe to say that ATI wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft. pole.....
You are SOL if you took the fan off...

Not if he can get an ATI fan. They can't cost that much, so just put the new
fan on and ship it off. JLC

Any ideas where the ATI fans can be obtained from? I have an AIW Radeon
which developed a noisy fan. The card had already been received back from
ATI as an RMA after it had to have a special newer BIOS version flashed into
it a couple of years earlier (it wouldn't properly display post or full
screen DOS information on my TFT monitor). I'm aware that the fan itself is
available from the local Adda supplier, however this doesn't have the ATI
connector lead on it. I obtained an RMA from ATI and sent it back but
they're taking a very long time (almost 3 weeks now) to supply a replacement
and I think it may be easier to get a new fan elsewhere. I also have a newer
8500DV with an identical fan but it's days are numbered too. I'd much prefer
to install one of those quieter 3rd party VGA coolers but they all seem to
be for the latest spec cards these days e.g. 9800 Pro etc and aren't
designed for an old 8500DV.

I'm pretty sure the 9800 Pro and earlier cards have the same heat sink bolt
pattern, so putting on something like, say, the VGA Silencer Rev. 3 should
pose no difficulty.

Shouldn't be too hard considering their HQ is in Markham, Ontario. ;-)

Fit an Arctic Cooler if you can. It's what ATI should have used in the
first place.

Why not just call ATI and tell them your cards fan is dying and ask for a
replacement?
They will courier out you a new one, generally with the heatsink
attached, in my experience.

Thanks for the suggestion, alas the 8500DV has no cooler mounting holes in
the PCB at all (I think it was the last Radeon in that regard) - the Adda
Chip Cooler is stuck to the GPU face much the same as on earlier Radeons. I
really don't want to try gluing a lop sided "goliath" like the rev 3 onto
the GPU as it might stress it too much.... not to mention collide with the
tuner module.

Experiences of those who've actually tried a non-standard cooler on an
8500DV would be very much welcomed.
