RIS - New XP install does not recognise USB keyboard

Dell have just started shipping USB keyboards with their new computers and
I'm having problems getting them to work on new installations of XP.

All our computers are installed using RIS on a desk with a PS/2 keyboard and
mouse KVM box, allowing us to work on 4 computers at once. This worked great
while we were being supplied with PS/2 keyboards and mice, but it seems that
Windows XP does not recognise these new USB keyboards and mice until *after*
logon.

This means that I'm having to install windows, then plug in the USB keyboard
and mouse while they're logged on so that windows can install the drivers.
It's no longer possible to just install the machines and plug in the user's
keyboard and mouse when I get to their desk

These devices don't need any special drivers - the ones included in Windows
XP work fine. Does anybody know of any way to get these drivers installed
automatically, or a way to get the USB keyboards working before I have to log
on?

You'll want a bunch of USB to PS/2 adapters. Getting a KVM to work with a
USB keyboard and mouse is going to be problematic at best. You might try
checking the BIOS to make sure that they are set to enable legacy support
for USB if that is not already selected.

It works for us doing that with the dell keyboard with card reader.

try waiting a few minutes after plugging in the keyboard
