Ris Error Message

I created a Ris image on my server, but when I tried to
load it back onto the same machine, it gets so far, and
then comes up with the following error message:-

--------
CAUTION: The selected operating system image cannot be
modified to match your computer's hardware because of a
missing driver or lack of resources.

The image may work if your hardware is similar to the
hardware in use when the image was created.

I have the exact same problem occuring to me. I'm not trying on the
same machine, but on 2 just like it. I suspect it might be some driver
issue, maybe for the NIC. I made the image from a DELL Optiplex GX260
with an onboard Intel Gigabit NIC which have given me problems before,
but then I didn't get this error message.

Dawn,

Are you installing XP or 2000? What SP is on the Server? Is the server 2000
or 2003?

If you install Win2000 on the client machine by using a CD, does it find all
the drivers or do you have to add them? Especially special drivers for the
chipset, motherboard, nic, etc. If so, you may need to follow these steps
to add the 3rd party drivers (refer to the section on RIS):

How to Add OEM Plug and Play Drivers to Windows Installations

Didn't work.

I don't have any problems at the start of the install - it
starts copying files to my PC and gets to the end, or near
the end, and gives me the error message. If you click on
C to continue, it acts as if it is at the end of the
install and reboots.

It even then tries to load Windows 2000 but just keeps
crashing.

I am installing Windows 2000 SP4 and SP4 is on the server
as well.

The thing is that I did get the image on the server once,
but realised that I had forgotton to add some software, so
I brought the image back, removed it from the server,
added the sofware and "risrep" again. All seemed fine,
until I tried to bring the image back again, and now I
fear I have lost everything!!

Does this happen on all clients or just one? If it is just one machine, you
may need to update the BIOS on the mobo.

If you are updating the SP level of your images, rememebr that you don't
update the existing image, you make a new one.

1. Save i386 from cd to hard drive.
2. Extract the SP to a different location on your hard drive.
3. Slipstream the SP into the new i386 folder.
4. Run RISETUP on the server and point to the newly slipstreamed i386
folder.
5. RIS workstation with the cd-based image.

Let us know how that goes (before using RIPREP).

Didn't have much luck doing anything. In the end, I had to
admit defeat that I had lost my image and recreated the
whole thing from scratch again. This time it seems to be
behaving itself, although I didn't do anything different??

Sorry to hear it, Dawn. I am glad you got the thing working again.

I've seen this on XP when the hard drive is bad, or the jumper isn't set right (wondering how it worked in the first place).
