ripples in image

I recently noticed yellow stipes in the scans on my HP 3200C.
A website recommended cleaning the mirrors.
After doing this (with alcohol and paper towels) the yellow stripes
were gone, but now the scans all have ripples in intensity, all through
the image. See

This occurs when scanning at any set DPI.
Have I wrecked it? Is this fixable?
Thanks

I have had this happen if the photograph I was scanning was on a satin or
stipple surface and so it did not sit perfectly flat on the scanner surface
(talking of micromillimeters here!). Most times the effect would go away, or
diminish, by turning the print 90 degrees.
