RIPPING A DVD

Well, DVD have files on them. The video files are in VIDEO_TS . So can you
copy them and then copy them back?

I have read somwehere about the need to do an exact byte-for-byte copy, or
ISO copy I have seen it called. It is possible that the Windows XP software
won't do this. I have a prgram called Paragon Easy CD-DVD Recorder. Perhaps
this will do it, but I haven't tried.

I would be interested to know as I am having real big problems trying to
create a DVD from .avi files. When/if I crack this problem, I would like to
copy the result to a DVD-R (rather than RW) knowing that it will work and
not create yet another coaster - how many glasses does one have to put the
coasters under anyway!!

To copy a DVD, use something like DVDShrink to rip the files to the hard
drive.

To create a DVD from AVI files, you need to use something like Nero or
Roxio, import the files and tell it you want to create a VIDEO DVD... and
not a data DVD.

Thanks for that info, Cari

I am currently trying to use Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.5 Suite Deluxe, but it
gives an error (from Visual Studio, which I don't even have installed any
more).

But I have pursued this in another thread, with little success. (I have got
replies, but nothing I do seems to work and I have just about given up all
hope.)

You replied on 29/05/2006 and suggested that I try one of PowerDirector
(www.gocyberlink.com) WinDVD Creator (www.intervideo.com),
Roxio (www.roxio.com) and Nero (www.nero.com).

I downloaded a trial versiom of WinDVD Creator. It ony allows 5 minutes of
video to be processed in the trial version. This tied up the PC so I
couldn't do anything else for over an hour. The result was a DVD which plays
in the PC - I haven't dared to try it in a DVD player, because all other
attempts at this have failed. Also the video was very dark. I need to check
the original .avi files to see how they display - I don't recall that they
were as dark as this.

So if I can get good video pictures using this software, would it take 12
hours for 1 hour of avi files?
(I currently have 72 minutes to process onto one DVD, if I can).

Do a google search for Super DVD Ripper. It costs $30 and is easy to use.

This DVD did *not* play in a DVD player.

I processed another avi file with WinDVD Creator. This time I clipped the
file to 4m 50s and wrote directly to DVD (while I went shopping so I
wouldn't have to endure watching the program working very slowly).
Previously I wrote to hard disk and then used a DVD recording program (by
Paragon) to write the file.

The later DVD did the same as the earlier one - it played in the PC but
*not* on a player connected to the TV.

The videos are still quite dark in any player. I thought they would be OK
because the thumbnail shows a much brighter picture.

What can one do to create DVD that a DVD player will play?
I have done it before - 6 times I think - but now I can't.
Now all attempts that appear to succeed don't really - they are PC only
DVDs.

Some info.
1. Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3.5 Suite Deluxe now gives this Visual Studio
message when trying to write to DVD
"An unhandled win32 exception occurred in DVDMF.exe [1672].."
The number varies each time. Visual Studio has been de-installed.
2. WinDVD Creator seemed to finish normally

I have read about the need to use "authoring software" and to finalise the
DVD.
Aren't both those I have tried "authoring software"?
What does one have to do to "finalise"? I thought the software would do
this.
Is there some other software which one has to (or can) use to "finalise"?

Can the result depend on the actual media used?
I have tried TDK DVD+RW with no success (i.e. it played in the PC but *not*
on a player connected to the TV.)
I have also used other media, e.g Imation DVD-RW. I don't know how good
Imation media are.
I have not (recently) tried TDK DVD-RW (I have none on hand at the moment,
but I can easily buy some if this may be the problem)

Another question:
Is Windows Movie Maker capable of cresting a stand-alone DVD from .avi
files?
If so, then I can ditch all the 3rd party programs

This DVD did *not* play in a DVD player.

What are the playing spec's on the stand-alone players you're trying to play
it on?

Mine will play +R disks only. If I try it on a friend's player, they won't
work. His will only play -R disks.

Sort of maddening....

AVI files, although mine is supposed to play them, work intermittently (may
have some audio rip issues or Divx or Xvid settings the player doesn't
like). I cannot get a VCD to play on anything so I gave up on that format.
Nero gave me issues on stand-alones (due to its own Mpeg4 format) as well so
I gave up on it too. Seems to work best if computer is the player.

My best attempts have been "AnyDVD" running and using "1ClickDVD Copy" onto
the media needed: DVD+R or DVD-R depending on the standalone player. Of
course those are VOB files, but they extract to AVI files fairly readily
with "Lathe" (v1.5) which has a brightness control for the rip portion.

Good luck and keep the coasters to a minimum.

The player is Samsung DVD-S124
The manual states "Ability to play back may depend on recording conditions"
(for these formats:)
DVD-R
DVD+RW, -RW
CD-RW

My successful DVDs have been TDK+RW in the days when Ulead worked
successfully.
I think I also recreated one on a DVD-R (or DVD+R) which played OK too. I
can't remember the brand or whether +R or -R (and I can't check since it has
been posted to my daughter) - I do know that it played before I posted it.

I am now trying TDK+RW again and Imation DVD-RW. Both fail to play on a DVD
player, but once created, they play OK on PC

Yes, it is. What is worse for me is that I have done it before and now it
fails. I now can't get the Ulead software which worked before to write to
any DVD, let alone one which plays on the PC (which would be a start).
AVI files, although mine is supposed to play them, work
intermittently (may have some audio rip issues or Divx or Xvid
settings the player doesn't like). I cannot get a VCD to play on

My .avi files will play OK on the PC, although sometimes jerkily - perhaps I
don't have enough power. The PC is Intel Celeron 1.1MHZ with 512Mb of RAM
(well 496MB after allowance for other stuff - probably to do with video)

I have not tried to play any .avi files on the DVD player
My best attempts have been "AnyDVD" running and using "1ClickDVD

Here I am getting lost
1. Are you saying "AnyDVD" is the software used to play files on the PC?
Since I don't have any problems playing videos on the PC (if I can create
them, that is), I don't need any new software here. Windows Media Player,
Real Player and Ulead DVD Player all work with .avi files, VOB files (and
MPEGs too if I recall correctly)

2. "1ClickDVD Copy" looks like the software to copy to the DVD
But I want to copy .avi files to playable VOB files
Does it do this?
Why would I need to extract the VOB files back to .avi ?
Are you copying MPEG2 (or MPEG1) files to VOB, perhaps?

Can you confirm that you have software that creates a playable DVD from .avi
files ?
Does "1ClickDVD Copy" do this?
If so, where do you get it ?
I would like to get something that may have some support, which is why I
have used Ulead and am now trying WinDVD Creator, but to quote a famous
saying "If it works, use it". In any case, the Ulead forum has not been
able to help me as yet.
Good luck and keep the coasters to a minimum.

Thanks, but at this stage all is very dark and gloomy - and not just the
videos I have managed to produce, which are in fact quite dark !!
