Running XP Pro SP1. Now when I right click my start button I do not
get the context menu. I just get the hour glass on the start button
and on my task bar. Right click works everywhere else.

I can only do a hard reboot because once I right click the start
button I cant even get the start menu to open.

This just started right now.

Any help fixing this is greatly appreciated.

Depends on many things, start here: Run the edit on line 157

Thanks for replying.

Those edits didn't help. I notice also that after a reboot I an right
click the taskbar, no problem, but as soon as I right click the start
button then I cant right click the taskbar anymore either.

It also happens in safe mode and I did a complete virus and trojan
scan, nothing found.

Meanwhile, try Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!:

Thanks but there isn't anything in the tool that refers to my problem.
The only thing close would be restore to default.

Thing is that the rightclick is fine on the taskbar unless I
rightclick the start button first.

Something I just noticed might help. I have three shortcut buttons on
my keyboard, internet, email and search. After rightclicking the start
button none of these features work either. Not only that but the
Microsoft key on my KB doesnt work either after rightclicking the
start button. All those features work fine if the start button is not
clicked.

umm.. I would trace all the read/write attempts, using R'mon. Get it from www.sysinternals.com Trace explorer.exe 'read' attempts first, save as LOG file. [in case]. Restart and trace all the write attempts [both while the start button is right-clicked.] Might turn complicated, but in most cases it gives you a clue.

I got the program you recommend and I tried to do what you suggested.

This is over my head. Actually got a headache trying to read these
things and not knowing what they mean.

Thanks for the help but I can't make anything out of this one. It
looks like I am stuck with this problem.

Live and learn.

First I want to thank everyone that tried to help me solve this
problem. I have fixed it just now.

This problem was driving me nuts and I wasn't going to let it beat me.
I just racked my brain to try and remember if I had changed something
recently and the only thing that came to mind was my PGP. I did not
uninstall my PGP I just shut the service and removed the PGP tray icon
from my startup menu.

What this problem has to do with PGP is for the more knowledgeable, I
don't have a clue on the connection. the only thing that brought this
to mind was it was the only thing that I had changed recently on my
PC.

I started the PGP service back up, basically I reinstalled it and once
it was running again my right-click problem went away, go figure.

The only thing I can think of that PGP might have had to do with this
problem, and I'm not an expert, is the PGP Mail plugin that I had set
for my Outlook 2003. There is an option in Outlook 2003 under
help>about where you can disable the PGP module (plugin), which I had
done since I wasn't using it. After starting up PGP again I went back
to Outlook and enabled the module. In my intermediate PC mind I would
think that is the connection to windows that was causing the problem.
I might of avoided this problem if I had just uninstalled PGP
completely. Maybe I'll never know the actual reason but it is working
fine now and I want to thank you all again.

You should say that you use PGP. I almost posted PGP can cause this but then decided it was unlikely a normal person would have it.

Well, normal people do mistakes.
