right click for special letters/characters

Dear Microsoft designers,

Add a right click, pop-up window opening, selection for special
letters/characters. OmnipagePro15 has such a list as part of it's word
processor functions. For inserting unrecognized special characters such as
letters with accent marks, lines over the letters for long vowl sounds, etc.
(pardon me as I forgot the terminology for this). Something should be done
about inserting uncommon letters or markings that are not on the keyboard.
For, the simple-minded to whom going outside of what Microsoft Word has built
in will greatly appreciate it. In any case, a built-in wizard to assist in
the process of adding fonts and the inserting of special letters/characters
should also be integrated into the 2007 version of Microsoft Word.

I don't know if this idea has been suggested before, but it definitely isn't
the first time it has been thought of.

You're right, it isn't the first time it's been thought of. That's why
it has been part of the program since the beginning...

In Word versions up to 2003, use the menu item Insert > Symbol. In
Word 2007, the Symbol button is on the right-hand end of the Insert
ribbon.

I have to sympathize with the Word designers here. They needed a term that
encompassed all the things that appear in all fonts. The technical term in
the font business is "glyphs", but that would be unfamiliar to almost
everybody. "Special characters, unusual letters, and symbols" is just too
long for a good menu item. They settled on "Symbols" and relied on people to
read the Help (as off-base as that might seem).

The main way you add new symbols is to install a font that includes those
symbols. That isn't strictly a Word function, but rather a Windows
function -- Word just uses whatever fonts are installed in Windows. In some
cases you can create the symbol you want by combining two or more existing

description of the method for doing that.

Finally, you can add the Insert Symbol command to the right-click menus
yourself -- see

particularly steps 2c and 4. As you do that, you can change the wording on
the menu to anything you like.

I assume you were unaware that you can customise your right-click to show
you anything you like?

Look up "Customize" (with a 'z') in the Help to see how...

Thank you. I found it after posting. Excuse me. I argue that it should be
shown as an option when you right click. Besides, the word symbol is
misleading when one is looking for letters with diacritical marks. Adding it
to the right-click would solve that because it would put the option within
immediate view from the page itself. Things connected with typing should be
shown in a right click extension. That is my opinion.
