Rick, if someone only had the 98 recovery disk and wanted to do a clean
install over XP, would they be S.O.L.?

Thanks, you are one of the sanest ones here.

I'm not Rick, but 'it depends on the type of recovery disk'. Most of
these rely on a hidden partition on the hard drive, so if that has gone,
then so are your chances of re-installing Win98 (although you can buy a
real Win98 CD these days for a few $$). If the 'recovery disk' really
has a copy of Win98 it can blast back at the hard drive, then you may be
able to re-install.

Repeat after me 'recovery disks are a lousy idea'. 8<,

Run the CD from the recovered 98 system. Enter Install, change Upgrade
to New Install, then when it asks you to confirm where, you can hit ESC
and get the chance to select the current partition, delete it, and
create a new RAW one, going on to format it as part of the setup

This will give a clean installation, and by that point will also have
detected that it is a legitimate upgrade,
