You can collapse and expand the ribbon by pressing Ctrl+F1 or by
double-clicking any of the tabs across the top.

While it's collapsed, if you single-click a tab to expand it and (maybe) use
something on that ribbon, the ribbon will automatically hide again when you
click in the text. That will keep happening until you press Ctrl+F1 again or
double-click a tab.

If you're asking about removing the ribbon completely and going back to the
menu/toolbar interface, the answer is "not really" but read
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/CustomizeRibbon.htm.

Hi P.,

You can reduce/toggle its size with Ctrl+F1, but there isn't anything in Office 2007 to remove the ribbon and return to 'older
style' menus. There are 3rd party add-ins available that add back the older style menus.

In addition to what has already been suggested, there is another approach.

Just add Toggle Full Screen View button to the Quick Access Toolbar from the
command well (Commands Not in the Ribbon or All Commands) which allows you to
view the document without the Ribbon.

To add the Toggle Full Screen View button to the Quick Access Toolbar, click
the Office Button to display the Office menu, click Word Options to display
the Word Options dialog box, click Customize in the left pane, under Choose
commands from, select All Commands. Scroll down to Toggle Full Screen View,
click Add and click OK.

Click the Toggle View Screen View button on the Quick Access Toolbar to
display full screen view; press ESC to return to whatever view you were in so
that you can access the Ribbon

Only shortcut menus and the Mini Toolbar, which gives you access to a broad
range of formatting commands, are available in full screen view – just right
click.
