Reviving Check boxes?

I am still using old FAX templates (from 97 Office Suite) with 2003 Word.
I have no problem with using them except for one problem.
That is check boxes. In the fax form, there are check boxes in front of
Urgent, For Review, Please Comment, Please Reply and Please Recycle.
But those checks are not working: I could not type X mark in those boxes.
Could someone help with reviving the dead check boxes. Craig

Those check boxes depend on macros and AutoText entries that must be present
in the attached template or in Normal.dot.
