Reverting to SP-3

Due to the problems I have encountered with SP-4 I wish to
revert to SP-3. Can anyone explain to me in basic terms
how to achieve this. Thanks.

When you installed SP4, there should have been an option to archive
certain files of your SP3 system. If you chose that option, basically
all you need to do is boot from your original W2K install CD. As part of
that boot process (ensuring that you have your CD drive first in the
boot sequence), there will be a recovery or restore option (not sure of
the wording) which will access the archive files and rebuild/restore the
SP3 system. If you *didn't* archive, you have a larger problem.

Hi Fester,

I am assuming you are the sole administrator of your standalone Windows 2000 computer
and that you installed the Service Pack by visiting the Microsoft Windows 2000
Service Pack Web site (Express Install, or Network Install). That is... SP4 was not
installed by your Systems Administrator and/or by using Microsoft Systems Management
Server, Windows Installer technology, or other automated methods.

If you selected to "Archive Files" and you can boot into Windows 2000, remove Service
Pack 4 by clicking Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Windows
2000 Service Pack 4: Change/Remove > follow the prompts > click OK to restart the
computer.

If you selected to "Archive Files" and you can not boot into Windows 2000, remove
Service Pack 4 by following the steps in this Microsoft Knowledge Base Article:

KB825062 Service Pack 4 Permits You to Remove the Service Pack by
Using the Recovery Console
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=825062

And if you selected "Do Not Archive Files" you would need to do an in-place upgrade
to remove SP4. You may want to try and fix the "problems [you] have encountered with
SP-4" before doing an in-place upgrade. For more information about performing an
in-place upgrade see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Articles:

KB292175 How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows 2000
