Word has a feature similar. It shows the formatting codes in a side pane I
believe (can't find it in 2007 but I am sure it was there in 2003)

Hi Joyce -

This is an issue that is as old as Word, itself. The plain & simple fact is
that Word (as we know it) does not, has not & never will have any such
feature because it doesn't use *any* such embedded codes, ergo there are
none to reveal. The two programs are based on completely separate & distinct
programming design structures.

I understand the frustration of having to use a different tool for the 'same
old' task, but your time & effort would be better invested if you learn to
use the new tool rather than wishing it would work like the old one:) It's
funny, but when WP was introduced everyone *embraced* it because it was so
much easier to use than its predecesor (WordStar), but when Word arrived on
the scene, WP users *shunned* it for the same reason.

You might have a look at the articles on these pages to start with;

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/WordVsWordPerfect.htm

http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/

As well as exploring a wealth of good info available from;

http://word.mvps.org/index.html

And don't hesitate to post any specific issues you might encounter here...
In fact, you might be surprised how much you can pick up just from spending
a little time each day reviewing the posts in these Word newsgroups. Vast
experience from professional users familiar with both products is available
for any guidance you require :)

This is one of the most often requested features -- and almost always from
WordPerfect users.

The fallacy of the request is that Word doesn't have any codes to show.
Unlike WordPerfect, which embeds actual code characters in the data stream
to indicate where formatting starts and stops, Word uses a "container"
approach to organizing formatting.

Word 2002 and 2003 have a "Reveal Formatting" task pane that shows you how
the formatting at any particular spot got to be that way. Read more about it
at http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/RevealCodes.htm.

There is a third-party product that will "fake" a WordPerfect-style "Reveal
Codes" pane. Visit http://www.levitjames.com/crosseyes/CrossEyes.html to see
whether you want to buy it.

There's a Reveal Formatting Task Pane but it supplies plain English
descriptions of the formatting - no cryptic embedded codes as there are
none.
