When I want to retreive a letter previously saved the letter shows current
date instead of the original date it was written. I would like to preseve
and retrieve with original date

Right-click the date and choose Toggle Field Code. You'll see something like
{DATE \*MERGEFORMAT}
Change the word DATE so it says CREATEDATE. Right-click and choose Update
Field. Save.

Jay,

I tried your recommended procedure, but it didn't work. I got the Toggle,
but when I typed CREATEDATE and right clicked there was no Update Field.

I'm not sure what you did, but I'll guess that you somehow wiped out the
field braces so that it isn't a field any longer. Try again, starting with
inserting the date field, but this time just click between the first brace
and the DATE and type in the CREATE part. Then press F9 (which is the same
as right-clicking and choosing Update Field).

Alternatively, I think Update Field has been added to context menus only
recently. As you point out, however, you can accomplish the same thing with
F9 (you may also need Alt+F9 to toggle the display back).
