hi all, thanks in advance for your help!
Windows became corrupted on my IBM Thinkpad R51 so I used the PC's Rescure &
Restore process: I rescued a whole bunch of files to an ext HD, and then
restored Windows using a backup. BUT, that backup was a month old so I
'lost' recent emails & contact details etc from Outlook 2003. My question
is: what type of files should I be looking for (among the files I saved to
the HD) and how do I restore them to Outlook? Is this even possible? I am
running XP Pro.

Making sure that you can view hidden files, look for file(s) with a
..pst file extension. That/those file(s) contain all of your data
(messages, contacts, etc.).
