Retrieving lost word document

I saved a word document over top of an old one and closed the file. I need
to retrieve the old document. Is it possible?

If you had unlimited funds then you could do it,
because magnetic media retain the history of what
gets stored several levels deep. In practical terms
the answer is no.

Ask a Word group or expert. SOME edits are saved with the document and can
be undone - or so I've heard.

1. Word can automatically make copies of files opened. It's off be default but check that yours is off. Tools - Options - Save

2. There may be autorecover files.

3. Word uses temporary files.

For 2 and 3 a file undeleter may find the original file (though the name is lost)

Your only hope is to look for a file with the same name but
with the extension ".wbk".

If he has GoBack 3.2 installed and active he could choose Recover Files
option. If the overwrite occurred within GoBack's memory he can choose to
recover it as an overwrite, or placed in a different folder with the
original name, or renamed within the original folder. I normally make the
recovered Needed.doc to be Needed Old.doc and placed in the original folder.
