Retrieving e-mail messages

My e-mail messages only arrive when I manually select the send/receive tab in
the OUtlook toolbar. They do not arrive at start up or at any other regular
intervals. How can I configure OUtlook to retrieve my messages automatically
(without having to click on the send/receive button)?
 
In Outlook 2003 (The only version I have access to right now, its pretty
similar in previous versions.)
TOOLS...OPTIONS...MAIL SETUP...SEND/RECEIVE put a checkmark against
Schedule an automatic Send/Receive every....
