Retrieving deleted data

I know that deleted data is retreivable, however how can you delete a file
and make sure that it cannever be recovered?

Also how can an entire disk be set so that no deleted documents can me
recovered?

If you really mean "never" then you have two choices:
- Flatten it with a steam roller, or
- Melt it down in a furnace

All other methods of erasure can be reversed if you throw
enough money at the disk. Even data that has been overwritten
several times can be retrieved.

Secondly, given this is the case, what is the best method to delete data to
stop the off the shelf type software from recovering it?

Get a program like Power Desk/SystemSuite (www.v-com.com) and write zeros
all over it.
