retaining formatting in TOC?

This is a bit confusing to explain, but I'll do my best to make it make
sense!

I have modified the styles for my built-in headings to be Arial Narrow, bold.

The TOC1 style is Arial Narrow, bold; the TOC2 and below styles are Arial
Narrow, regular.

So, in the TOC, my chapter titles were bold; section headings were not bold.
That was great.

Now my customer wants things to be a little different. They like the bold
chapter heading and section headings in the text. But now there are certain
"key words" that are used in the section headings that they would like to
appear as bold uppercase in the body text and the TOC.

To handle the text part, I just created a character style called Key_Word
that was bold and uppercase based on the underlying properties of the
paragraph. That works fine.

If I apply the Key_Word character style to the key word in the section
heading, the bolding is turned off for that word, even though the Style in
the "style box" indicates that is a Key_Word style. I expected that since I
was applying a bold character style on top of something that was already
bold.

However, what I was hoping for was when I generated the TOC, that the
Key_Word character style would "stick" for the TOC -- and I would have an
entry that would be non-bold text for all of the heading, except that the key
word would be in bold. However, that is not happening. It's all non-bold
text.

For example: Say my section heading is
"Voltage Range (voltage T voltage)". The "T" is considered a Key Word.

The section heading is bold. When I apply the Key_Word character style to
the "T", it becomes non-bold. That's OK.

But when I generated the TOC, I would like the entry to be all non-bold text
(which it is now), but for the T to be bold. That's what I can't get to
happen.

And one last thing: The customer wants the TOC entries to be hyperlinks,
not just the page numbers. Sigh. My Hyperlink style is based on the
underlying properties, no underline.

I tried to see if there was some type of field switch I could use, but I'm
not seeing anything.

I can help you only with the last: the entire TOC entry will be hyperlinked
(not just the page number) if the TOC field contains the \h switch. This is
added by default, so you must have opted not to include it by clearing the
rather deceptively worded box for "Use hyperlinks instead of page numbers,"
which doesn't really remove the page numbers except in Web pages.
