Restricting Guest, User or Restricted User progam views

Tom

I am trying to restrict my daughters access to my programs
and view of my programs as a guest or restricted user
under XP Professional. Currently she can see all of the
programs in the Program Files directory and I'd like to
hide the view to most or all of them.

Any suggestions?

You may try "Software Restriction Policy" under Local Security Policy
applet. This MMC is found in "Admistrative Tools" using ADMinistrator
account.

John, this restricts modification of software but does not
restrict the view or use of programs.

The only other suggestion I can think of is that newer software does give
you an option whether you want to install that software for Yourself only or
allow everyone/all users to use it. If you can find any
software/applications on your PC that offer this, then uninstall/re-intstall
them using the "for your use..." only option.

Other option is right-click on the Start/Properties/Customize/Advanced, and
hide/uncheck as many objects as possible.

Hope this help,

John

First, remember there is no alternative to educating her to differentiate in
right and wrong.

To achieve what you want, you need to create a "Restricted Users" group, add
your daughter's account (plus any other accounts) to that group, and Deny
permissions to that group for "C:\Program Files" folder.

Detailed instructions:

1. To create an empty user group:
2. Run->type: "lusrmgr.msc" and then press enter
3. Right click on Groups
4. Select New Group...
5. Name: "Restricted"
Description: whatever u like
6. Add Users: your_daughter, Guests,...

press OK and close Local users and groups console

7. Now go to C:\ in Windows Explorer
8. Right Click on Program Files
9. Select Properties and goto Security tab
if security tab is not present make it visible using instructions at:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_security_tab.htm
10. Press Add...
11. type "Restricted" (or wahtever name u chose in 5 above)
12. Now Restricted is added as one entry in pane titled "Group or user
name:", with Restricted select in this pane, unselect all tick marks in
lower pane.
13. Carefully select "List folder contents" under Deny column.

Press OK and close all dialogs. Read warning saying about denying acess etc
and accept OK.

Now those users wont be able to view the Program Files folder. You can
repeat the same procedure (7. to 13) for any other folders you want to
restrict. Optioanlly select "Read", "Read and Execute" instep 13 to deny
access to read or execute programs.

(Make sure your daughter or any restricted account is not an Administrator
or else they can undo all this)
