When I put together this machine I used a 20 Gig system drive. For some
reason I split it into two 10gig partitions. The system partition is fat 32
the second NTFS. I want to back up the whole system partition to a new 40Gig
drive and then format the old 20 gig drive as one partition and restore to
that new partition. When I restore can I just boot from the install CD a
start the restore process? Will all my updates come back (SP2, security
updates, etc.)? Is this a dangerous pain in the butt? The reason for all this
is that a 10gig partition ain't what it used to be!!
Thanks

Roy

If you Image your System Partition you can do what you planned on. And
yes, everything will be restored including SP2.
You don't use the WinXP CD to do what you want unless it's to Repair XP.
Imaging Software is Ghost 9 and
Acronis True Image. There are others but these I think are the most
popular. You can google and see what comes up.
Because part of what you want to accomplish is to repartition and
format the 20G drive you will have to perform a
clean install of WinXP which will necessitate losing SP2, all your
updates and files. Hope this helps.

You need to use imaging software to clone the current drive to the new hard
drive. Note that any programs installed on the second partition may need to
be reinstalled. You would need partitioning software to remove the first
partition and then resize the second partition to the empty space.
If all you want to do is copy over the data on the old hard drive, it can be
done from disk management after the new hard drive is setup.
After cloning the old to the new, disconnect the old drive making the new
drive the primary master. After the first boot you can then reconnect and
format.
