Restoring OE Backup files

Joachim

Hello once again, gang.
I just installed XP Home on my machine and before I wiped the HD I saved the
DBX files for OE from my WimME system. Now with a clean XP Home install
running beautifully, I want to "restore" the DBX files into OE, or wherever
they need to go, so I can recover all of the email files that I had.

Does anyone know where I need to place these DBX files? And will restoring
these DBX files cause me to lose the emails I have received over the last
day? Meaning, will I be "writing over" the existing DBX file by placing the
new one in the directory?

Start Outlook express and select File, import, messages then point to the
location where you stored the old files.

I did this. I have placed the DBX files on the desktop. The problem is
that is where the "pointing stops." On the desktop. It doesn't give me the
oppotunity to select the specific files and thus it says "No messages can be
found in this folder... etc etc"
They are there. I look on my desktop and I see them.
My problem is I have 6 DBX files. 3 Sent Items files and 3 Deleted Items
files. I had 3 different email accounts. Now I don't know how to determine
which Sent file is which, etc.

That is because you didn't backup the file called Folders.dbx so Outlook
Express does not recognise the files as a message store. the solution is
this.
Open OE. Create folders with the same names as the folders you have backed
up. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING IN THEM.
Close OE.
Copy the folders you have backed-up into the same location as your current
message store. (If you don't know where that is, in OE go to
Tools-Options-Maintenance-Store Folder and it will tell you where your
messages are stored)
Then re-open OE and your folders should be there with all your messages.

Thank you so much for the responses! I've tried this before. The message
store that OE is telling me through the Maintenance/Message Store tab does
not exist in Explorer! How strange is that. I cannot follow the directory.
It does not appear in explorer. I can only get to "layer 3" of the directory
that is about 7 layers deep.

Joachim,

I've done this a few times, after clearing an acount. I saved the .dbx files
on CD then import them into the re-created account with no problems. I just
point to the location on the CD and the wizard imports all the messages into
the current account. Don't know why it's not working for you.

See the WinXP caveat at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/store.htm#storemain. DBX and WAB files
are marked as Hidden by default.
