Restoring files on new HD

F

Fred

Before my hard drive failed some files were copied to a CD-R disk with Roxio
CD Creator 5.01 Basic. Attempts to open these files or copy them to a new
HD has failed. Some error messages have indicated that the files are "Read
Only". Others have suggested trying to open them with the program that
created them. (Mostly MS Works spreadsheets and Word).

Anyone know how I might open or copy these files to the new HD?

Install the same version of Roxio.

Files burnt to a CD-R are always read only.

Did you copy the files to CD using Easy CD Creator or Direct CD? If the
later then you may not have closed the CD.

Do as the OP sugested and reinstall the Roxio suite.

You do realize that Roxio CD Creator 6.0 was the first "official" version
that was compatible with Windows XP. If you used version 5.0, you had to
install numerous updates to make it compatible. You mention Roxio CD Creator
5.01 Basic. The latest/last version (obtained by installing the Roxio
updates) of CD Creator 5.0, was version 5.3.5.10. This latest version WAS
compatible. This could be the cause of your problems! Your files may be
damaged/destroyed because you didn't have the updates for Roxio.

Anyway, install the same program, Roxio CD Creator 5.01 Basic (with ALL the
updates please), on the new operating system (if it was the operating system
drive that failed). Then you should be able to get at those files. You could
also install the current version 7.5.

This problem also may occur because the CD was not closed out, but left
open - waiting for additional files to be added to the CD. Without Roxio
installed, you may not be able to see those existing files. It can also
occur if the CD was not closed out "to be able to be used in ANY
computer/device".

There are various eject options, when using Roxio, and it is up to the user
to chose the correct one for his purposes.

Apart from Richards excellent advise also see if you have those files set to Read Only in their Properties. If you do then remove the Read Only checkmark.

Select the files, right click, properties, uncheck the Read Onl
attribute. Hope that works
