Restoring files backed up with Windows 98

Does anybody know if it is possible to restore files that
were backed up with Windows 98SE with Windows 2000? I have
tried, but Windows 2000 tells me the back-up file is
corrupt even though the file will restore fine with
Windows 98.
 
The 2 versions are incompatible. Options are restore to a mutually
accessible drive or use a universally compatible 3rd party program to do
the backup.
