Does any kind soul out there know how I can restore files that I backed up
ten years ago, on a different computer that ran under Windows for Work Groups
3.11, onto my present computer that runs under XP?

Thanks a lot if you can help.

Adrian.

As far as I remember they were created using the microsoft backup utility
that came with Windows for work groups. There are three files in the set and
they have extensions .001; .002; and .003. The extensions are not generic but
incremental. What I was wondering is if I can get hold of a windows xp
compatible program that will unpack these files and allow me to retrieve them
from the backup files.

To be honest with you, I am not absolutely sure how MSBACKUP used to work.
However, I think it packed individual files together into compressed format,
rather in the way winzip does now. Presumably other people have this same
problem with wanting to retrieve old, archived data from backup files made
years ago. Has abybody othe there done this?

Did you do this to 1.44MB, 720KB or 1.2MB 5 1/4" floppy disks ?

If so, the data restoration, if possible, may fail becuse the floppies are
unrelaiable when that old.

Thanks David. The files are on 1.44 MB floppies. However, I have also copied
them onto my hard-drive now and as far as I can tell, the information is
intact. What I need is a backup/restore program that is compatible with the
files and will run under windows xp. Any suggestions?

Adrian.

Try Virual PC trail version.
Install VPC
create a DOS virual machine
Install WFW over that.
Run the recovery.
Copy / paste into your PC (if it lets you) or setup virtual network from DOS
VPC to to your PC and retrieve thru virtual NIC to virtual HDD.

Pice of cake. lol

Did Windows 95 have a utility for restoring files backed up with wfw? I have
a major problem in that I stored a lot of unique graphic and publishing files
using the 3.1 backup utility. Now I can't get at them?
