Restoring Active Directory

Any input is more than welcomed!!!

We are trying to practice restoring our backup domain
controller. this is our first time trying to restore
everything, we have restored deleted files before but
never AD and exchange and everything else. on the server
we have AD and Exchange server 2000. we are restoring on
a dell desktop that has 2 20 GB hard drives. We use
backup exec for our backups. we are able to finish
restoring the system state in Directory Services Mode,
but as soon as we reboot, we get a blue screen with the
error of Inaccessible Boot Device. It doesnt let us do
anything after that!! we eventually reformat and try
something else, but we need some help. Is it impossible
to restore on a machine with different hardware?? Any
suggestions/answers/comments are welcome. Thanks
