Restored PST file, lost all my contacts.

L

Luis

After installing Vista SP1, I ended up with a hung system, so I re-installed
windows.

I also installed a new copy of Office 2007.

I pointed my personal files to a restored copy of my "PST" files.

This restored everthing except for my contacts. (E-mails, calender, Todo,
etc).

Is there some other place I can find my contacts?

Thank you in advance,

Luis

Verify you used the correct file and are using the correct view to see your
Contacts. State how you "pointed Outlook" to the file.

I started by copying the PST file to
C:\Users\Luis\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst

I then used Mail in control panel to add a personal folder.

When I entered outlook, everything except for my contacts was in working
order.
(Inbox, calendar, todo, etc).

I also have many backups of my PST file, so I restored several of them, and
placed then in a folder "C:\BACKUP\OUTLOOK\outlook.pst".

I then used "File - Open - Outlook Data File" to open the pst file within
Outlook.

This created a new "personal folder" structure. Again, e-mails, calendar &
everything else except contacts.

Finally, I copied the PST file to a memory stick, and tried opening the PST
file on an Office 2003 outlook on a Win XP machine. This machine also
opened the file, but again no contacts.

Bad move. You never copy an Outlook data file to the default location
because you will most likely overwrite another file and corrupt either your
data file, profile, or both. Use the correct methods we post here daily,
unless you've already trashed your only copy of your data file.

I have many backups, and all of my original data files, so that is not a
problem.

As best I can tell, the advice posted often on the board is to use "File
Open" and then to simply open the PST file.

I have done this on many versions of the backup file (ranging from today to
several months old), and the PST file consistently does not have any contacts.

They do however always contain every other folder with the correct
information.

Unless we know exactly how you created, transferred and are connecting to
these files, we cannot figure out how you are losing your Contacts (are you
sure you are using the correct view to see your Contacts?). The process is
simple:
1. Copy your Outlook data file when Outlook is closed.
2. Move it to any location on the other installation's hard drive except the
default Outlook location.
3. Open the file in Outlook using File > Open > Outlook data file.
All your Outlook data will be there.

I ran into the same problem. Look at Microsoft Help & Support Artical ID

Hi,

You can try a tool called Advanced Outlook Repair to repair your PST
file. It is a powerful tool to recover messages, folders and other
objects from corrupt or damaged Microsoft Outlook PST files. It's
website is http://www.datanumen.com/aor/ And you can also download a
free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe
