Hi
Where are the System Restore files located and what ext does it use?
Thanks for any help you can give.
Daj

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore and the extension is EXE. This is not a folder
you want to open and poke around in. If you do, it's at your own risk.

Hi Daj

The files are stored in a folder named System Volume Information. If you
change anything in that folder SR will proably not function correctly. What
do you want to do with the SR files?

I was just thinking if I made a restore point and then moved that file say to my external drive I
would have a back up I could use when I upgrade to SP2, just in case something went wrong.

Hi Daj

You can't backup the SR checkpoints and then use them at a later date. When
you upgrade to SP2 a checkpoint will be automatically created. You can also
create a manual checkpoint yourself before the upgrade.

Does this make sense? Can this be done?

No. Restore points are not separate files in the sense in which
you want.

If you prepare properly for SP2, it's very unlikely that anything
will go wrong. Read http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=45

If something does go wrong, you can normally uninstall it from
Add/Remove programs, or worst case, use System Restore (even
without moving a restore point).

Hi

Saving the files in the SVI folder won't help,as they have to be linked to
Registry entries. Too time consuming to work out which Registry entries go
with each SR checkpoint.

Thanks, now I know. I have learned a lot from you people, and am very greatfull for you answers and
help.
Thank all of you who have responded so gracefully.
Daj

Thanks, Daj

Thanks for any help you can give.

They are in the hidden, protected folder 'System Volume information' on
each drive. In a folder in that there are a set of RPnnn folders that
each contain the components stored in a specific point.

Leave them strictly alone if you do not want to foul up SR. If it gets
into trouble, disable it, reboot, delete *all* the files in that folder
and start over. On an NTFS drive you will need to 'Take Ownership' of
the folder before you can delete the contents - or even see them in
Explorer
