When you use system restore (I think) it makes a mirror image of your
boot drive, compresses it and then stores it.

It takes up a lot of space and for me, isn't worth it since I can fix
most problems I encounter. Failing that reinstalling with XP is so easy
it's almost fun.

Natch. Shouldn't have said that...

System Restore :: In MS's own words .......lol

"The System Restore feature of Windows XP enables you to
restore a PC, in the event of a problem, to a previous
state without losing personal data files. System Restore
actively monitors system file changes to record or store
previous versions before the changes occurred. With System
Restore, you never have to think about taking system
snapshots as it automatically creates easily identifiable
restore points, which allow you to restore the system to a
previous point in time."

"you never have to think about taking system snapshots"
Oh, really.

I is not a mirror image of the boot drive. It simply backs up system files
in case something goes wrong with the system, restore usually gets it back
working. It does not backup personal files or apps, just xp system files and
settings.

Fair enough. I must be thinking of Norton Ghost.

Yes, ghost, drive image, acronis true image, all are disk image backup
programs.

Hi

You can see which files/folders SR monitors/doesn't monitor by typing the following from Start>Run

%systemroot%\system32\restore\filelist.xml

Cool, thanks for the tip.
