Change the position of the Reading Pane to the bottom and set the Navigation
Pane to Folder List.
Drag the shortcut bar for the Navigation Pane down.
Change the Other Settings of the Current View to not to use the lines
between messages.
I think you are quite far in achieving your goal now.

1) Set the Reading Pane to the bottom; View-> Reading Pane-> Bottom
2) Set the Navigation Pane to Folder List
3) Ungroup the messages; View-> Arrange By-> Show in Groups
