Restore won't work

I appear to have recently developed multiple problems and would really like
an expert to discuss them with. For example, when I attempt to use the
restore feature all I get is a blank block on the screen. When I attempt to
do a search on the hard drive, I get nothing. When I attempt to use windows
update, I get nothing. Help.

Hi

1. One or more of the System Restore files could have been corrupted - try
turning SR off/on - but I'm afraid that you will lose any existing
checkpoints:

Right click My Computer, select Properties and then the System Restore tab.
Enable 'Turn off System Restore on all drives' and reboot your PC. After
that 1st reboot go back into SR and disable 'Turn off System Restore on all
drives' and reboot your PC again. After that 2nd reboot you should have one
new SR checkpoint.

Thanks. I am not at the home computer right now. There is no error message,
just a pop up screen with nothing on it. This all started about one week ago
when I got a message indicating that I had to uninstall and reinstall my
antivirus program. After taking care of the uninstall part I discovered that
I could not reinstall. When I went to the web site to reinstall I found I
could not use hyperlinks. Since then I have downloaded the microsoft
antispyware beta and cleaned the machine thoroughly and reinstalled a new
antivirus program. No spyware and no virusses. However I still couldn't use
hyperlinks. So I downloaded mozilla foxfire and hyperlinks work with it.
Then I found I couldn't do updates (I guess because automatic updates
interface with IE. That's when I decided to try and restore. And here we
are. I am so frustrated.
