Edward said:Hi, Martin.
XP automatically sets its own restore point each day when you first
boot up.
Edward said:Click on System Restore. On the Welcome Screen, click "System Restore
Settings"

I hope we're talking about the same thing here.
I have just checked System Restore on my PC and it shows restore
points back to July 20. Some days (1 in the last 8) are greyed out.
In "System Restore Settings" you have a sliding scale to set the
amount of disc space you allocate to SR. There is also a
enable/disable option...
....and I doubt very much that you are "dense"

Edward said:Sorry if that is what it seemed I was saying, Gordon. I meant each
day - roughly - XP creates a restore point, I am told, on the first
boot of the new day. You can, as I am sure you already know, create
your own restore point, even at that moment in time. (Very useful if
you are about to try something iffy).
Sorry again if I mislead anyone.

Gordon Burgess-Parker said:Well I may be being totally dense - there's nothing there I can see about
setting a daily restore point....
Maureen said:Perhaps this is a Home \ Pro difference? I have XP Home and see
nothing in the welcome screen settings or elsewhere about making a
restore point at first boot.

"Pick a Task" that says "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore"?
Clicking that link should give you the option to create a restore point.
(At least in XP Home.)

When you click on "System Restore" in 'System Tools', do you get a
window with three options - "Restore my computer to and earlier time:
Create a restore point: Undo my last restoration.
When I select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" it opens the
"Select a restore point" window. This window has on its left a
calendar above which is "1 On this calendar pick a bold date" and on
the right a box with the present date on each side of which are
forward and backward arrows. Above this box are the words "2 On this
list click a restore point." Using the arrows it lists backup points
all the way back to July.
It is reasonable, I'm sure, to assume these backups are made
automatically each day. My colleague, who informed me the backup was
created at boot up, is now not so sure, but, nonetheless, a backup is
made, it seems, daily.
