Hi Guys,

I was wanting to roll back my system but XP is unable to resore any previous
point. My dive is split into C, D & E partitions. My documents reside on E.
After I choose a restore point I get the following error message: "Changes
made to drive E: after this point cannot be reversed because the drive was
either excluded from system restore monitoring, or was turned off or
removed".

After the system reboots I get told that a restore point was unable to be
restored.

Any clues about what is going on and how to fix it?

Cheers,
Greg

Did you disable any of the petitions SR?

Hi Greg,

Once System Restore goes bad, the only thing you can do is stop it and
restart it. Start/run services.msc, locate the SR service and doubleclick
it. Click the stop button, then set the startup type dropdown to disabled.
Click apply/ok, then reboot.

Then, check the "System Volume Information folder" on each drive (you may
need to set folder options/view tab to see hidden and system folders for
this) and delete any contents. Reverse the steps to restart it.

Be forewarned that doing this removes all existing restore points, but it
doesn't really matter as they weren't working anyways.

If this does not help, follow these steps to reinstall System Restore:

Go to the Control Panel/Folder Options/View tab, set it to "Show hidden
files and folders" and "Show the contents of system folders", then uncheck
"Hide protected operating system files [recommended]". Also uncheck "Hide
extensions for known file types".

Then, open Windows Explorer from Start/All Programs and go to the
C:\Windows\Inf folder. Locate the sr.inf file, right-click it and choose
install.

You may need to either insert your WinXP CD or know where your I386 folder
is located on the hard drive. You may also need to know where the
\ServicePackFiles folder is (usually under the Windows directory).

Insert the Windows XP CD
Start>Run>Type the following command and press Enter
"rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf"
System Restore core files should be reinstalled.

As a start point, System restore does NOT handle user data files and
documents. Those need a separate backup. This is so that if you
restore the system it does not undo all your hard work on your
documents.

If it has got into trouble, it is probably sensible to clear it out and
let it start clean too. System Restore. Check 'Disable System Restore,
and OK, reboot. Now have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden
files, and *not* Hide Protected mode ones and delete everything in the
System Volume Information folder on each drive (On an NTFS drive you
will probably have to boot to Safe Mode, log on as Administrator, and
'take ownership' before you can do this)

Start SR up again, and I suggest reviewing the settings for each drive.
There is not much point having it enabled on data drives, and on ones
with System or Programs I would reduce the space allotted if more than
say 1GB - I use 500MB, the minimum is 200 which will only handle maybe a
week of points. But the default of 12% of a drive seems too much for
its own good on modern large drives
